If your well pump seems to turn on and off every few seconds while you're using water, you may be dealing with a problem known as short cycling. Instead of completing normal operating cycles, the pump starts and stops too frequently, placing unnecessary stress on the motor and other system components. Your pressure tank relies on the proper balance of air and water to maintain consistent water pressure throughout your home. If the tank contains too much or too little air, the pump may restart after only a small amount of water is used, leading to rapid cycling [2].
Checking and adjusting the air charge requires the system to be depressurized and should be performed correctly to avoid creating additional problems.
Many modern pressure tanks use an internal bladder to separate compressed air from water. If the bladder becomes damaged or the tank loses its air charge, the pressure tank may become waterlogged and lose much of its usable water storage capacity [3]. As a result, the pump may repeatedly cycle between its start and stop pressures with very little water usage.
A failing bladder often requires replacement of the bladder or the pressure tank itself to restore proper system operation.

The pressure switch tells your well pump when to turn on and off. Burned electrical contacts, sediment buildup, clogged sensing ports, or incorrect pressure settings can interfere with normal pump operation and contribute to frequent cycling [4, 5].
Since the pressure switch works together with the pressure tank and pump, diagnosing these issues often requires evaluating the entire system rather than replacing a single component.
Sometimes repeated pump operation is caused by water pressure slowly leaking away. A hidden plumbing leak, running fixture, failing check valve, or damaged well piping can allow pressure to drop, causing the pump to restart even when little or no water is being used [3, 6].
While this situation is not always considered true short cycling, it still signals that your well system should be inspected before the problem worsens.
