The Advantages and Disadvantages of Having Your Own Well System

Many new houses all across the country are having to make the decision of whether they want to get their water from a well or through their local water system. While each of these options has their advantages and disadvantages, we feel that opting for a well water system is going to eb the most beneficial for residents living in areas like Northern Virginia and Great Falls.

To help you understand why getting a well system may be right for you, we want to look at the good and bad sides of utilizing a water well system. At the end, you will have a better idea of what you could get out of a well system and if it is right for you. Let’s start by first seeing why so many residents are choosing to move to well water systems.

WHY SO MANY CHOOSE WELL WATER

Water wells are rapidly becoming more popular as people are trying to get away from needing to rely on their government for things like electricity and water. Rural areas like Manassas and Fredericksburg are seeing a much higher usage of well water than ever before as the area has plenty of underground water that residents are able to gain access to with wells.

People are tired of having no water when the town is facing a heat wave and realize that a well can solve many of their water related problems. Considering getting a well installed takes a lot of thought and consideration, so let’s look at a few of the advantages and disadvantages that can help you make your final decision.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF WELL WATER

ADVANTAGES

NO BILLS

One of the primary reasons that people look to use their own supply of water is to take advantage of the fact that you don’t have to pay for your own well water. When you get a well water system set up for your home, the only costs that you will need to worry about is installation and the occasional maintenance that your unit could need.

No bills for you water usage means you are going to save plenty of money off water bills that can quickly add up over time. If you choose the right well system, you could be saving money on both maintenance and water bills that you won’t have to worry about again.

FRESHER WATER

Despite the extensive cleaning that they try to do for town water supplies, nothing can come close to the taste and freshness of natural well water. This water is coming from a natural underground aquifer which is one of the most nutrient and mineral rich sources of water.

Normal town water supplies just use rain and groundwater that can be easily contaminated by the old pipes or source issues. The mix of nutrients and better taste makes well water something anyone can enjoy drinking.

SAFE IN BAD WEATHER

When issues occur that limit the amount of water a town can give out, you will still be able to access all the water you could need. Floods and big storms can affect the public water supplies and cause a shortage of water supplied by the town.

As long as your well has power going to it, you will be able to get the water you need in emergency salutations. Your personal well water will be safe from these common issues and allows you to not get too worried when things start to get bad outside.

DISADVANTAGES

NEEDS POWER

Despite the many benefits that having well water brings, there are some downsides that need to be considered. One of the major downsides of using a well system is that it will not be able to move water without power going to the systems. No power to the pumps means no water pressure in your home.

This may seem like a major downside, but there is an easy way to work around this issue. If your home has a generator for essential parts of your home during a power outage, that power can be used to get water moving even when the normal power has gone out.

NEEDS MAINTENANCE

While public water supplies have the public works system to take care of their issues, you are responsible for taking care of issues with your well. From small things like low water pressure to issues with getting water to your sinks, you need to be the one to deal with resolving the issues.

Luckily, there are great well repair companies that are eager to help homeowners get their water running smoothly again. You can give these companies a call and have them come out to address whatever issues you are having in no time at all.

CAN BECOME CONTAMINATED

Evan as well water is generally much safer from external pollution that can damage public systems, it is not completely immune from getting contaminated. Things like fertilizer, dead animals, and even radiation can get into the soil and affect the overall quality of the water in your well system.

Because of this, many well water systems can put filters in place to eliminate the harmful substances within the ground. If you get your well water tested and install a filter, you will have very little to worry about when it comes to the quality of your water.

CAN RUN OUT

The last disadvantage to well water is that obviously there is limited supply and it can potentially run out. If you run out of water in your well because you used far too much one month, it is all on you to find another way to figure out how to get your water.

While it is unlikely you will use all of your water and be stuck, you need to make sure you are getting your water levels checked so you know what is there. Being responsible and informed about your well water will allow the system to be a great alternative to using public water.
