How to Perform Annual Maintenance on Your Well Pump System

When you are making your spring cleaning checklist, be sure to add well pump system maintenance to the list. It is much wiser to perform preventative maintenance and hire someone for a well pump service visit than to wait for something bad to happen.

As Cliff Treyens of the National Ground Water Association explains, “What often happens is that a small, easily correctable problem becomes a large, inconvenient, much more expensive problem. Treating your water well system this way would be like never having an auto mechanic look under the hood of your car until a catastrophic breakdown.”

Many homeowners with well systems simply don’t know what they should be looking for when they are performing an annual inspection of their well pump system. Today, we’re sharing a basic checklist to help well system owners perform annual maintenance

CHECK THE WELL COVER AND WELL CASING

Begin by checking the exterior of the well system. You want to make sure the well cap is secure and is not damaged. Look over the well casing to see if there are any potential issues, such as holes or cracks. You should also be on the lookout for any type of insect infestations near the well cap.

MAKE SURE THE WELL SYSTEM IS CLEAN

During your spring maintenance, you should make sure all the filters are cleaned. Likewise, you should also remove any debris or material from the well system. It is also wise to flush your pressure tank. If the well system is unclean, you could run into issues such as low water pressure or cloudy water.

TEST THE WATER

The National Ground Water Association and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend testing the water from your well system annually. The water should be tested for bacteria. If you have a septic system, you should also test the water for nitrates. While the water should be tested each spring annually, you should also have your water tested any time you notice a change in the quality of your water.

SEE HOW THE WELL PUMP PERFORMS

When it comes to preventative maintenance, it is important to pay attention to how your well pump performs. Start by checking the amps on your well pump. Are the numbers what they should be? In addition, you should look for potential issues. For example, does your well pump seem to be working harder than usual? Is your water pressure dropping? Do you have to reset your well pump motor often?
